Tribal QONF: Reason #2 to attend the conference

If you have not checked out my previous post - http://enjoytesting.blogspot.com/2020/05/tribal-qonf-reason-1-to-attend.html, please do.

For someone who is not aware of The Test Tribe community or The Tribal Qonf, I thought I will share a few pointers on why this is a must-attend event for any software tester.

In my last post, I highlighted the opening six speakers. In this post, I want to touch upon the next set of six speakers.

Mike Talks
I know Mike for close to a decade now and met him for the first time last year at Test Leadership Congress. I love his tweets and blog posts and his books too! When I was writing my book - 50+ mistakes of my software testing career, I had my first mindmap with all the mistakes. I shared it with Mike and within minutes, he gave me feedback on how I could make new sections and club a few mistakes. He is speaking at this conference. If you want to have a small bite of Mike's talk at Test Leadership Congress, check this link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9ZWnbinAxI

Aprajita Mathur
Aprajita at TLC
I met her in the Test Leadership Congress (TLC) conference. Before that, I was in the same panel discussing Leadership. I felt she is someone who is bold, would say the truth at all times with a lot of attention to details and get things done. She is working with data to fight cancer. Beat that for real-world impact.
You can listen to her TLC talk here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlFceDqTxpc. I am looking forward to her energetic talk once again in the Tribal Qonf conference panel discussion.

Anand Bagmar
He has his own fan following. People consult him for his automation, mobile, analytics expertise. One thing I have always noticed is his smile when he greets people. It immediately makes the other person comfortable. He will be speaking on Testing and Automation Analytics. Looking forward to his talk. Do not miss his talk!

Nishi Grover Garg
From a time when she applied to Miagi Do school of testing founded by Matt Heusser to giving talks all over the world, I would say Nishi has crossed many levels with ease in a short time. If you are active on social media, you would notice a talk at a conference or a blog post or an article published in one of the reputed websites or she would have finished training to eager participants. Ever busy, ever willing to share her knowledge, she deserves more and I am happy to see her present in Tribal Qonf.

Santhosh Tuppad
Craziness is the new normal :)
What do I say about him? We have our birthdays in the same week and there are multiple moments where we exactly know what the other is thinking or about to tell. We have worked together for Test Maniac meetups and workshops and continue to collaborate even now. His talks always continue even after the time is up and no one complains. They just love him. I am sure some of you will buy the tickets just to listen to him and I am sure it will be worth it even this time as well.

Priyanka Halder
Again, I and Priyanka were in the same panel discussion at Test Leadership Congress and then we met at the conference. I have this habit of shifting tables every few hours and one such shift helped have a 15-20 mins discussion with her. Her weight loss journey and her speaking journey will motivate anyone!

After we discussed about the Decision Deck

Tribal Qonf: Reason #1 to attend the conference

I am so excited about the 2 days virtual conference organized by The Test Tribe community.
When I think about it, it is natural for me to be so excited considering Mahesh (Founder of The Test Tribe) and I discuss every other day on how to help testers and help them see the power of the existing testing community.

For someone who is not aware of The Test Tribe community and The Tribal Qonf, I thought I will share few pointers on why this is a must-attend event for any software tester.

Speakers: One of the best lineups you will ever see! Check it out yourself.

James Bach
https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-bach-6188a811/

When I started my testing career, I wanted to be a testing expert and searched in Google - "How to be a testing expert". To my surprise, there was already a video - Becoming a Software Testing Expert by James Bach. That video played a very important role in how I started focusing on testing skills. I am in constant touch with him and learning with every interaction.

His website - www.satisfice.com will definitely satisfy your hunger for testing.
Heuristic Test Strategy Model is my favorite article. There are many more.

Heuristic Test Strategy Model

Ashok Thiruvengadam
https://www.linkedin.com/in/ashokstag/

From the time I got introduced to Shrini Kulkarni (https://shrinik.blogspot.com), he always referred Ashok as a sharp thinker and his teacher. I attended the Hypothesis Based Testing workshop by Ashok. Shrini was right. Humility and Knowledge - I saw reside within the same person.

Also, his articles on testing give a different perspective on the same topic.
I loved this mind map by him https://smartqa.org/blog/50-software-testing-terms-that-are-most-often-abused/

50+ most often abused terms

Michael Bolton
https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-bolton-08847/

I first met Michael Bolton in his Rapid Software Testing for Managers workshop. I paid my one month's salary for 2 days workshop. And the rewards were mindblowing. The lessons from the workshop helped me with opportunity after opportunity.

His twitter bio reads:
"I solve testing problems that other people can't solve, and I teach people how they can do it too."
I agree with that statement. I remember one incident where I pinged him for his 30 minutes time as I was struggling with self-doubt and negativity. He listened patiently, gave me actionable ideas, and inspired me to kickstart my career again.

Pradeep Soundararajan

The world loves him and his talks are always houseful. The first testing workshop I attended was his workshop and he introduced me to the Context-Driven school of software testing and thinking. He was the one who introduced me to James, Michael, Cem, and many other expert testers. In the first BWST (Bangalore Workshop on Software Testing) - a peer workshop, I met Shrini Kulkarni, Rahul Verma, Rahul Mirakhur, Manoj Nair, Santhosh Tuppad, Ravisuriya and other testers who were so passionate to share their stories.

BWST1 Participants
His book - Buddha in Testing is a hit with many testers.

Anna Royzman
I met her first in Agile Testing Days, Berlin and then in CAST. I used to ping her on Skype when I started leading teams and her advice helped me. She then invited me to Test Leadership Congress. I was amazed by the community feeling I felt during a conference and most of the participants are still in touch with each other.

We both along with Praveen Daga are bringing the same conference to India with a small twist. Stay tuned :)

Rahul Verma

I would like to use my testimonial to describe him
Clear thinking, excellent articulation, thorough research, superb oratorical skills are some of the qualities one could learn from Rahul Verma. His blog posts, workshops and talks have been inspirational to many and I am one of them. He is a great role model for many testers. His usage of mind maps in workshops to demonstrate complex points and his efforts behind the hands-on exercises is commendable. Given a topic to learn, you could be sure that he would start from basics and move on to the most advanced. You can question him and he would not feel bad. He would listen to you and answer your questions to your satisfaction.

I have covered just 1/3rd of the speakers till now.

If you are asking me, how to purchase tickets for this conference, this is the link: https://www.townscript.com/e/tribal-qonf-2020-a-virtual-conference-by-the-test-tribe-431224

Call for Speakers from STeP-IN Forum and First meetup of the year

Meetup Details

The first meetup of STeP-IN Forum was successfully conducted on 20th January at Verity Training office and was attended by 10+ testers. For the first meetup, we had picked the theme of testers' role in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and data Science.

Interesting discussions revolved around the future of mundane jobs, the history of ML algorithms, what each participant felt about AI, the skills required to get started on these fields and how to apply them in software testing. We also discussed about the repercussions of these and how they have started affecting us in a negative way to some extent or the other.

Is it beneficial or harmful - definitely upto how we apply them in our lives.

As testers, what is our role? Continue to be critical thinkers, point out the loopholes and finally bring in the human/social impact in all our decisions.

Machines and algorithms will amplify what is fed. What needs to be fed should be a humane decision.

We did not realise how time flew and we were at the end of the meetup and we wrapped it up with a photograph and exchanging contact details. A happy meetup for sure!

Looking forward to the next month's meetup with a similar interesting topic and more participants.

Meetup Participants
And it is that time for year when you can put on your thinking caps and submit your thoughts for the most awaited conference in India running across cities - the STePINSUMMIT and the city specific conferences - DSTC (Delhi), HSTC (Hyderabad) and PSTC (Pune).

STEPINSUMMIT 2019
The call for speakers is open and early bird tickets are available as well. The two days would be worth it considering the diversity and expertise of the speakers, the audience interaction and the sponsor booths where you can learn from the companies first hand how they can solve your problems. In our day to day work, we are so close to the problems that we may not get the spark or a different perspective to solve it. Listening to the speakers from different organizations, interacting with them, making new connections, meeting friends again, participating in multiple contests would be a great experience. The value one would get out of the two days would be very high compared to the early bird costs of the two day conference.

Think about it, buy the early bird tickets and immerse yourself deep in software testing over the two days. Book your calendar and let us meet there!

September was fun with workshops, book and conference

Mobile Testing Workshop | The Test Tribe | Bangalore

September started with a full house workshop for The Test Tribe community on Mobile Testing. There were two mobile app developers also present in the audience. The audience seems to have liked the content and a few testers had never tested a mobile app. Thanks to Mahesh and team for organizing it from start to end and taking care of all the arrangements.

If you are interested in having this workshop conducted for your teams, feel free to email me at ajay184f@gmail.com

Testers worked on hands-on exercises from the mobile testing workbook. They were introduced to the mobile terminology, testing models, common bugs, techniques, and tours, tools and finally they tested a mobile app and reported the bugs.

Global Testing Retreat | Agile Testing Alliance | Pune

Then it was time for Global Testing Retreat at Pune organized by Agile Testing Alliance. It was a 6 track packed conference filled in a single day and multiple lab sessions. The diversity of topics was mind-boggling and one had a tough time picking which sessions to attend. There were two fun skits and a good panel discussion as well.

Call for Speakers for two of my favorite conferences in India

Agile Testing Days Asia
Global Testing Retreat

I love both these conferences for the learning, networking opportunities and the people behind these events. They genuinely see these events as an opportunity to help the community and not as a money making opportunity.

Does that mean they provide free tickets?
No, running a conference is not easy. They don't get things for free. So, it is obvious that they use the registration charges to offset the expenses.

Why do I recommend these two conferences:
  • Respect for individual over designation
You might be the least experienced in the room but if you have a great idea, it is appreciated and recognized in public without any partiality.
  • Stick to timelinesBefore, during and after the event, if they promise something, they deliver on time.
  • Honest and transparent
If they say there are 10 registrations, you know that there are 10 +/- 1 registrations. It is not 2 or 20. If there are any goof-ups due to any factors, they openly admit it and give YOU the options to choose instead of forcing an option(read decision) on you.
  • Hard working and humble
I have learned a lot on how to run a conference smoothly just by observing these two conference committees from close quarters. They don't brag about the effort and the sincerity behind the hard work shows in the success of these events.
  • Good at heart
    I remembered the quote:

“Remember, people will judge you by your actions not your intentions. You may have a heart of gold but so does a hard-boiled egg.” - Maya Angelou

These folks are not just good by intentions but their actions are also praiseworthy.
So, my dear friends - Open the notepad/mind map/notebook and get ready to submit for these conferences.

    Deadlines to remember:
Agile Testing Days Asia: December 16, 2016
    http://agiletestingdays.asia/call-for-speakers/

Global Testing Retreat: February 01, 2017
    https://www.papercall.io/atagtr2017

Have they paid me to write this? Yes, they have paid me in love, affection and touched my heart. They have my full support.

See you in these conferences. If my paper does not get selected, I will pay the fees and attend :) Anyways, we will meet!

Follow them on twitter: @stepin_forum and @TestingRetreat

Done with STeP-IN SUMMIT 2016

July 28: Workshop at Bangalore
Some of us were not sure if the workshop would run as scheduled. There was a Karnataka bandh (strike) proposed on July 28th. Later, it was restricted to North Karnataka. We went ahead with the workshop. Some of them were happy with the format of the workshop where I tried to explain a concept followed by an exercise to the participants. Some of them did not like the break in flow. It is hard to please everyone. Also, to note that it is indeed very hard to conduct a hands-on workshop and also explain many concepts in the same day.

While one participant complained that I came late to the workshop, I am sorry for it. I came 30 mins early to the time mentioned to me. I was unaware that the workshop was supposed to start 30 mins earlier than I arrived. I will ensure that this doesn't repeat.

We talked about Modelling, Mind Maps, Bug hunting, Test Ideas, Heuristics, Bug Investigation, Test Reports and Tools. I hope the workshop was useful to most of the audience as evident by the positive feedback I received from the feedback sheets. I learned from Rahul Verma on how to collect  feedback- just give the participants a blank sheet and ask for feedback.

Bangalore: Intense minds at work
July 29: Workshop at Hyderabad
Soon after the workshop at Bangalore, I flew to Hyderabad. The flight was delayed and I reached my hotel at 3am. I did not want to be late this time and was in the meeting room by sharp 9pm. This workshop, I wanted to try a different approach. Half day explanation, half day hands-on exercises.
And guess what, I received feedback that the first half was interesting and some of them felt lost in the second half. By now, you must have guessed how difficult it is to come to an approach that everyone likes. Many liked the session on mind maps and the resources I presented to them for further reading and references. It was heartening to see that participants came from Cochin, Mumbai, Delhi for these workshops. Folks, just call me to your place and avoid the travel :)

Hyderabad: End of workshop, Start of learning
Immediately after the workshop, I reached Bangalore at night. The next morning, I was off for a trip with my wife till Aug 2nd.

Aug 3: Test Automation Contest
For the first time, I participated in a Test Automation contest. Our team from Sahi Pro had the experienced Kshitij Gupta and the ever enthusiastic Pratik Shah. We saw at least five of our customers also participating in the contest and they were using Sahi Pro. The only question we had in our mind was: What if they won and we did not win? What will we say to our CTO?

After some time, we were ready with the answer: "Even in a lookalike competition for Charlie Chaplin, the original Charlie Chaplin came third :) "

First round seemed easy till ten mins to the end of the round where we almost messed up the code and started to panic. Good sense prevailed and we troubleshooted and resolved just in time. Results were announced and we were through to the second round. Only 8 teams out of 32 teams qualified for the second round. In the second round, we had to present our case and be ready for the Q & A.

When we connected our laptop, the HDMI port was not recognized and we presented 7th instead of allotted 3rd. The judges seemed to like our approach and how we used the full capability of Sahi Pro.
We were happy with our efforts.

Aug 4: Summit Day 1
Welcome Address: Vivek Mathur kicked off the proceedings with a short speech on what to expect and how to get the most of the conference. It was crisp and noteworthy.

Vivek: Points to keep in mind
Keynote Address 1: Reinvent to Disrupt by Ashok Pamidi
I liked some of the points Ashok emphasized. The six major global technology shifts he mentioned included:
1. Digital technology
2. Cloud Computing
3. Automation and Robotics
4. Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Computing
5. IoT (Internet of Things)
6. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Major Global Technology Shifts
As a software tester, I had a thought: How many of us know something about all of these? Isn't it necessary to know at least something which will help us in a conversation about these topics? And no wonder that we heard most of the talks on these lines - IoT, Machine Learning, Automation, Digital, Cloud Computing.

Next Keynote Address was on Quality Engineer – Leveraging Your Potential/Profession in Digital world by Rashma Samani.
This keynote was also very useful. She shared her experience of testing SetTop Boxes and how testing is part of her life now. She asked us to get rid of few obsessions and also highlight our strengths.
Strengths of Quality Engineers
Next, Dr.Nandakumar Ramakrishnan honored each of the STeP-IN Tech Committee members. My part was reviewing the papers allocated to me and provide comments. Thanks STeP-IN for honoring us.

The next talk was: "Ninja or Samurai? The Art of War and the Future of Testing" by Wolfgang Platz.

Ninja vs Samurai
Though his claim of how exploratory testing cannot provide a comprehensive risk coverage was something I questioned, we could not come to the same point of view within the 5 minutes of Q & A time.

Then, the folks from Intuit shared their journey of how they transformed and inducted Quality in the organization through their talk: "Transformation Journey of Quality Engineering at Intuit". Karthik Krishna and Anandhavalli Krishnaswamy were the presenters. They highlighted how the testers at Intuit wear different hats at different stages of the product cycle. They also talked about they focused on the skills of the testers, how they helped the testers improve before expecting magic from the testers.
Different hats worn by Intuit Testers
Later, I attended the session by Santhosh Tuppad. He engaged the audience pretty well and shared his experiences of how he hacked many systems. He recommended OWASP, browser addons and learning about different tools. He asked us to focus on the mindset first before jumping into security.

Meanwhile, I also met Nikhil Bhandari, Parimala (@curioustester) and other friends once again!
With Krishna, Nikhil and Santhosh
I was a bit tired after non-stop traveling for the last week. So, I went back home. I also had to prepare for my talk the next day. At night, 9.30pm I started my preparations for the talk after conducting a webinar on Sahi Pro. You can also register for the webinar here: www.sahipro.com/webinar By 1am, I had my presentation slides ready.

Aug 5: Summit Day 2
I arrived straight into Rahul Verma's keynote: The Dogmatic Agile – ‘A Critique of Deliberate Blindness of Indian Wannabe Agilists’ and it was really thought provoking.
- Do not follow any process blindly.
- Focus on skills.
- Do not focus on just the extremes. Understand that the solution might lie in between the extremes.
Rahul's Keynote
Next tutorial was by Brijesh Prabhakar: Testing in the Extremes – an Olympics story!
This was an interesting tutorial in terms of how the team tested the application and systems with just 500 testers and 9000 test cases. It was surprising to know that the preparations start the day the previous Olympics ends. And they don't use any fancy models or tools. You had to be present at the tutorial to experience it.

Testing for Olympics
I did not understand much from the VMware presentation. I blame it on my lack of knowledge and not on the presenters. It was time for my talk. My talk was titled: "Automation in Testing — A session of Confessions, Introspection and Secrets".

The slide deck is here: PPT
A pic of my talk
Body language not in my control
Next session was on "Machine Learning in Software Testing" by Milind Kelkar.
He talked about the different Machine Learning Techniques and how they are applied along with the different use cases.
Machine Learning Techniques
When I asked him on how to get started with Machine Learning, he showed the following slide with Languages for Machine Learning. He referenced Coursera course and Andrew Ng. The next course starts Aug 8. So, enroll soon if you wish to learn more about it.

Languages for Machine Learning
Then the results for the Test Automation contest was announced along with highlights of each of the 8 presentations by the finalists. Team Sahi Pro came second and we were happy about it. One reason why we thought we missed the first prize was Sahi Pro is so feature rich that it might look that we did not do much in the 3 hours, which is acceptable. It is a testimony to the power of Sahi Pro. :)

Team Sahi Pro - The Runner Up
Sanal Nair (STeP-IN), Ajay, Kshitij, Pratik
That was end of day 2. I skipped the last session to talk to Shrini and Rahul.
Jayshree, Parimala, Vani, Sunil and Ajay
It was a great experience at STeP-IN SUMMIT. Most of my tweets have the hashtag #STePINSUMMIT16. Thanks to the organizers. And it is time for me to move on to the next challenge - The BugAThon :)

Year end conferences: STC 2015 and ThinkTest and a Wedding :)

After the Mobile App Europe conference held in Sep, I was invited to QAI STC at Bangalore and Think Test conference at Delhi.

QAI STC - The conference's theme was: Conscious Quality – Delivering Value Continuously, Constantly and Consistently
Last year, I had challenged the theme of the conference in my proposal. My proposal was not accepted. This year, I thought of supporting the conference theme :)

My title for the talk was: Software Tester's Role in Conscious Quality Delivery
I had started my professional speaking with STC way back in 2009 with talk on Weekend Testing. It was nice to go back to STC as a Keynote Speaker this time. I met many friends and made many more. I missed meeting Shrini as he was to talk the next day and I was flying to Delhi for the Think Test conference.

The talk went well and the audience seemed to like it. Many appreciated immediately after the talk.

Today, I got to know that I had won the "Community Choice Speaker of the Year" along with Shrini Kulkarni.

After STC conference, I and Abi flew to Delhi on 04th Dec. Thanks to Smita and Santhosh, we had the Mobile Testing Workshop at Times Internet office. It was a full day workshop and was an excellent opportunity to take Test Maniac to Delhi. After the workshop, we went to meet James Bach. He gave us an exercise and we solved it. It was a good thinking session and we chatted close to two hours. The next day, we were on time for ThinkTest. I presented on 50+ tips to improve tester-programmer relationship based on my book. Good sessions were on offer. I need more time to go through my audio recordings again and collect my takeaways.

After the conference, we left for Panipat for Sanket's wedding - our first experience of a North Indian wedding.

Till next time, take care and be fearless while testing !!!

Mind maps at STeP-IN Summit 2013. See you there.

One of the highlights of participating in Weekend Testing sessions is that you get to see others test, their test reports and thought process to an extent. When I participated in sessions conducted by Europe chapter of Weekend Testing, I noticed that few test reports were in the form of mind maps. Darren McMillan was excellent in reporting with the help of mind maps. When I asked him to help me with mind maps, he wrote this beautiful blog post which soon became the go-to post for mind maps. I myself would have referenced this over thirty times.

Over the last two years, I have practiced and used mind maps to collect all sorts of information.
Starting from test ideas to book draft to bug investigation, I have gained a lot by using mind maps. I have also conducted workshops at Hyderabad and Chennai on usage of mind maps in testing. It was well-received. So when STeP-IN agreed to my topic of mind maps, I was happy. I see this as an opportunity to help more testers realize the power of mind maps and save a lot of valuable testing time.

Do attend STeP-IN Summit 2013?

I am presenting on mind maps on June 18th and there are other valuable presentations and workshops too. Hope to see you there. An overview of my presentation can be found here.

Any questions, feel free to ping me.
